I Miss TV Commercials

I haven’t had a television for most of the past four months. It only took a few days to get adjusted to life without TV. Sure, I would catch a movie, game, or sitcom when visiting friends and family. I learned how little TV really matters.

A few weeks ago, I did purchase a new television. However, I didn’t hook up satellite or cable. I’ve watched a few movies, mostly ones I already had in my collection.

A couple days ago, I decided to sign up for Netflix. I also decided to check out Hulu. While checking out Hulu, I remembered there were a couple of TV shows that I enjoyed watching: Fringe and Modern Family. Both are available on the Hulu service. I signed up (price is right too) and added Fringe and Modern Family as favorites.

Since signing up, I’ve watched a couple episodes of each. Of course there are a few commercials included with the program, but not as many as would be during a normal airing via traditional TV. When the commercials started to play, at first I switched over to another tab in my browser. But then I started to watch the commercials too.

Why? I’m not sure exactly. But the commercials I’ve seen are wittier than I remember commercials being a few months ago. Have you seen the Quadricorn commercial? And friends and family have confirmed this. During the past few months, I remember being asked dozens of times if I saw such and such commercial or the advertisement from so and so. Okay, I don’t remember all the specifics except that the people in my circle have been talking more about commercials lately than the programs they watch on television.

What does all this mean? Are we entering a new era of advertising genius? Or is TV so saturated with boring, monotonous programming that it lacks something?

Regardless, I strangely find that I’ve been missing watching those TV commercials.
