Silicon Valley Coming To Indy
There were two business news stories in Indianapolis last week that are rooted in Silicon Valley:
- Scale Computing has grand opening ceremony at Purdue Research Park Indianapolis facility, their new home and headquarters.
- Beckman Coulter will add 100 jobs in Indianapolis in 2010.
Scale Computing launched its data-storage system less than a year ago. Their technology uses a “grid-computing” concept to cluster small and inexpensive devices into a larger storage network. Scale’s products can reduce costs by up to 75%, compared against conventional technologies. The company was originally started in Silicon Valley by serial entrepreneur Jeff Ready. Ready, a Rose-Hulman graduate, has been part of other start-ups–some successful (Corvigo), some not. In fact, Scale Computing is a result of a failed effort (Volt Capital). I’m excited about this news for a few reasons:
- Scale Computing is a start-up that received funding from Indiana capital sources.
- Scale’s products are high-tech.
- Ready and the Scale team are serial entrepreneurs. Indy needs more people who have done this before and are willing to do it again.
Beckman Coulter, with facilities in Park 100 on the NW side of Indianapolis, announced they will be adding 100 jobs to Indy operations during 2010. The jobs will be related to Beckman’s injection molding operations. A couple years ago, Beckman Coulter brought its precision maching operations to Indy from Silicon Valley. These jobs will come from the company’s Southern California operations. With these additions, Beckman Coulter will increase its Indianapolis work force to over 500 employees.
