Indy Winter Farmers Market Now Open Saturdays Through April 2010
I was thrilled that Martinsville had a weekly farmers market this past summer. I visited a few times and was amazed by the variety of products available in my community. During one of my visits, I met Darby Simpson. He is an engineer by day and farmer evenings and weekends. Simpson’s Farm Market raises hogs, chickens, and cows without the use of chemicals and traditional feeds. They use organic feeds and their animals are free-range. I purchases some chicken from him one weekend. It was the best chicken breast I’ve ever eaten. I decided to purchase half a hog from him. Again, great flavor.
Darby told me about the Indy Winter Farmers Market taking place on Saturdays from November 14, 2009 through April 24, 2010. I didn’t make it on Saturday but caught a local news report on the market. It’s great to see locals selling their wares. I hope the “buy local” movement takes off in my community.
What are you doing to buy local? Do you frequent the farmers market? Do you visit the locally owned shops and restaurants in your town? If not, you should.
