I Guess People Are Working To Improve Martinsville

November 19th, 2009 by Jon Speer

You might have read the post “Who’s Working To Improve Martinsville?”. I sent an email to a few Martinsville / Morgan County contacts from the chamber, economic development organization, business owners, concerned citizens, etc. asking this very question. I received some responses, suggesting quite a bit was being done:

“We’ve got something that’s pretty preliminary in the dream stage right now.  I’ve asked for a team of Ivy Tech students to do some 2010 conceptualization on a river greenway in the county.”

“Actually, many if not all, of these items are part of the Martinsville Chamber’s Business and Community Development Committee’s attention in partnership with the Mayor’s office and the Martinsville City Council, as well as the Morgan County Economic Development Corporation and the County Council and Commissioners. A great deal of legwork and foundations have been laid by the appropriate agencies and the work is ongoing by many of the people you originally emailed…I would invite you and anyone else with the same interests to come work with us; we can always use more hands.”

This was news to me. I also interact with several business owners in the area. Very few feel support from these community organizations. Creo Quality has been in business for ~3 years. We used to be a member of the local chamber. But we decided not to renew our membership. We never realized benefits. The troubling thing for me is this: If there are all these activities regarding ways to improve the community, why is it such a secret? Why don’t businesses in the community know about this? Who is really working to help the businesses in a community?

Maybe I need to get more involved . . .
