Overuse of Stents

It’s been a while since I posted about stents–not because there aren’t news stories but because there are so many.
I just read the following indicating that stents and angioplasty procedures are used too often in non-emergency situations. Why is this? Have stenting and angioplasty procedures reached mainstream, commodity status? Are these viewed as “insurance”?
