Hire Stars!
I recently posted about a pitfall of delegation. Jacob Kearn at Medical Device Blog continued the story and commented:
“You will have less problems if you make smart hiring decisions, I think small companies in particular shouldn’t skimp on hiring experience, an extra $10k a year in salary can really be the difference between paying one person to do the job or having to get two to figure it all out.”
I couldn’t agree more–especially for a start-up. But it’s tough! The hiring process is (or at least should be) a time-consuming process. As Jacob suggests, hiring the correct resources may also seem more expensive. However, you should do what you can to hire superstars, especially if you are a start-up that is trying to get your company established and your first product to market. You need people that have a proven track record.
It is very tempting to go with a less expensive resource. But you must determine if the savings are worth it. Sometimes the cheaper resource will take more time to complete a task. Efficiency is a crucial consideration.
I’ve had the opportunity to help a large company with their hiring process. The engineering department needed to double in size within a short period of time. I’ve screened hundreds of resumes, received formal interview training, conducted dozens of interviews, and written several job descriptions. If I can help, let me know.
