Few communities have been hit harder than Kokomo, IN because of the downturn of the automotive industry. Both Chrysler and Delphi, along with several other automotive suppliers, were once prominent features of the north central Indiana community. We all know what’s happened in the automotive industry. The big question for Kokomo is will they survive?
Time will tell. However, there are quite a few initiatives well underway throughout the region, in large part because of a $15M WIRED grant from the Department of Labor. Here is a short video about some of the efforts in process:
Also, check out a couple of the other initiatives, including Neupath and Inventrek. I recently talked to Don McCreary from Neupath. He shared that Neupath provides engineering services and expertise. Clients include companies across the spectrum–from start-up to mature. Don also mentioned that Neupath will soon be launching a CAD lab. If you need CAD capabilities (both mechanical and electrical), you can either hire Neupath or schedule time.

One of the causes for concern with any economy is the conversion from manufacturing/goods based economy to a service based economy. All things considered though, I like the Neupath business model most. Has the propensity to put Kokomo talent to work for businesses from other regions.
Fortunately for Kokomo and the region, the Department of Labor provided a $15M WIRED grant. I had a chance to attend a recent WIRED event and was very impressed with the programs that were initiated. But the big concern raised is what will happen once the money is gone?
