As I’ve recently mentioned, Creo Quality provides strategic services for companies with life science opportunities. One challenge we have been faced with when engaging with clients is explaining and differentiating between strategic consulting and tactical consulting. So what is the difference?
Strategy and tactics are terms used often for military engagements and in chess. According to Merriam-Webster:
- tactics:
- the science and art of disposing and maneuvering forces in combat
- the art or skill of employing available means to accomplish an end
- a system or mode of procedure
- strategy:
- a careful plan or method
- the art of employing plans toward a goal
Generally, people seem to understand tactics. Tactics are more tangible and involve the act of doing something. Strategy, on the other hand, is somewhat esoteric. I’m not a big fan of military analogies, but I think this analogy helps clarify the differences between strategy and tactics.
