Over Communicate (and Help Your Project Manager)

With my “new” project management role for my start-up client, I’ve decided to add a “Project Management” category and will share stories, experiences, and my mistakes relating to project management.

I originally planned to tell a detailed story of recent events regarding one of the project resources. Time has slipped away from me. The issues have been resolved (mostly). So I’ve decided to keep this brief.

What is the most important aspect of project management? In a word, I think it is communication. The recent project management “excitement” revolves around extremely poor communication. One of the external project resources was basically 95 – 100% inaccessible during the work day. He wouldn’t respond to emails, phone calls, vmails, and other pleas to contact the project team. If you work on a project, one of your jobs is to communicate with other project resources.  I’ve rarely been involved in projects where there was too much communication. It is usually quite the opposite. Do everything you can to over communicate. This could make the project go smoother and will certainly help your project manager.

As always, if you want more details, let me know: jspeer@creoquality.com (I’ll share what I can).
